Champion Defined

Games have been recapped all season long. Fate has yet to be defined, and so I will put mine on public display to the Madden faithful gathered here on this email chain…

Every boy has his dream. Every man has his destiny. Last Friday, I fulfilled both and can now die a happy death. When I die, as is the certain fate of all men, I will walk through those pearly gates, approach the person with the longest line of people waiting to talk to him and proceed to skip it. I will be honored in heaven, as I embodied the American mythology; the man from nowhere who overcomes a singularly unpromising background to emerge as the greatest of national heroes.

When I finally did emerge on that second-to-last Friday of August 2008, after a long, grueling season, I was overcome with a curious happiness that reminded me of a whimsical quote from the aforementioned man with the longest line:

“As we lay and smoked the pipe of peace and compared all this luxury with the years of tiresome city life that had gone before it, we felt that there was only one complete and satisfying happiness in the world, and we had found it” (Mark Twain, Roughing It).

Happiness found indeed.

As for the next sojourn (season IV) on that train to greatness I call life, all one needs to hear is a modified line from the Mark Twain or our era, Lil Wayne:

“Lock, load ready to aim at any target, I could get your brains for a bargain, like I bought it from target, W+K is my supermarket, shopping cart full of fake Madden ballers, I’m starving, sorry, I got to eat early, and I’ll be back next season!”

VIVA MADDEN and VIVA you all for making the dream come true.
